Films are a part our life, to promote some indie-film production creations, film festival is held and let more citizen to know about the small production. Instead of local film festival, we are also having some international film festival around us, like Hong Kong International film festival and Hong Kong Asian film festival. These two are the largest film festival in Hong Kong.
However, is the diversity of the film festival could stretch beyond the boundaries of the inner city, spread out to other countries. I think the answer is ‘yes’ in Hong Kong, starting from 1977, the first Hong Kong International festival is held, aiming to let more citizen can appreciate the imperial film from other places, such as US, UK or Germany. Till this year, which is the 41th International film festival in Hong Kong, we can see there are different films and directors having some opportunities to share their artwork in the festival.
Starting from that moment, the boundaries of the inner city are broken. Although not all the boundaries are stretched, citizen are able to appreciate films produce from other countries. More director’s seminar from other countries coming to Hong Kong, sharing their experience to us.
Moreover, not only experience is shared, but also bring out a fusion of different culture. During the film festival, we are able to learn and receive others culture, to enlarge our film market, we are going to produce the film in a way more like them, in order to fit their taste and local culture. Under this circumstance, the whole world is being more ‘cosmopolitian’, films are becoming more globalized, we can see more Chinese elements in US movies, like Kong Fu panda, using Chinese culture and national treasure to produce a film, successfully cough the attention from China and also the interest from other places. This act is benefited to all the producer, which show out an opportunity to them how to get a higher box office.
The most important is, film festival is essential to the whole movie industry, which keep improving the technique of filming or refreshing different ideas, a place to trigger new idea. Sometimes, we are just thinking in a traditional way or in our own culture, film festival giving us a new way to think out of the box, not just thinking in the ordinary way, but in a way with creative inspiration.
However, why film festival is not popular in Hong Kong, in US or Korea, their government are strongly promoting film festival in their own country, not only about local film festival, but also International film festival. But Hong Kong, although we are able to know when and where the International film festival will be held on, are there enough promotion for the festival? Is there any increase in the number of people entry the film festival? If we want local film become more ‘cosmopolitian’, government need to pay more effort to promote it, letting more people to join the festival, together becoming more cosmopolitian.
